From Realistic Portrayals to Decorative Form: The Lysaker Circle and “Norwegian” Tradition AbstractThis article considers the role of Erik Werenskiold as the leader of the Lysaker community and the creation of a modern, national art characterized by the decorative. The group, including Gerhard Munthe, was strongly influenced by the theorist Andreas Aubert, whose ideas were in direct opposition to Jens Thiis, his rival for the directorship of the Norwegian National Gallery. The article focuses on this rivalry and also discusses the group’s attempts to influence the direction taken by the Norwegian National Academy of Arts.
