AbstractHistoric Landscape Characterisation (HLC) is a much-debated technique for analysing the landscape. This article will, firstly, examine the application of the technique to a number of Norfolk parishes at two dates and explore both the benefits and the limitations of the methodology as applied to the area studied. Secondly, it examines in greater detail the evolution of post-medieval enclosure in the area and demonstrates that the picture presented by the characterisation study is a simplification of the former complexity of the patterns of enclosure.
