AbstractThe present study is to determine the total flavonoids and antimicrobial capacity of different fractions crude extracts of leaves of Dodonaea viscosa (D. viscosa) collected from Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Sultanate of Oman. The collected samples were a shade dried and extracted with methanol. The prepared methanol crude extract was suspended with water and fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol solvents to give hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol crude extracts respectively. The prepared crude extracts were used for the determination of total flavonoids and antimicrobial capacity by well reported aluminum chloride (AlCl3) and disc diffusion methods. The highest total flavonoids content in the leaves crude extracts was in water crude extract and the lowest was in the hexane crude extract and the order was water> chloroform>methanol>ethyl acetate>butanol>hexane crude extracts. The antimicrobial capacity for the crude extracts of leaves of D. viscosa at different concentrations against one gram positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and three grams negative Escherichia coli (E. coli), Homophiles (H. influenza) and proteus ssp culture bacterial strains showed moderate activity of a range of 0-15 mm. The results obtained from this study could be a good source of antibiotics of the selected crude extracts for further study needed for in vitro and vivo pharmacological study of the selected crude extracts.
