INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE KOREAN ECONOMY AND CHAEBOLS

INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE KOREAN ECONOMY AND CHAEBOLS Abstract This paper examines the processes and characteristics of the internationalization of the Korean economy. It identifies chaebol as the key ‘actor’ of the country's internationalization. Initially, the nation's economy was deeply the involved with the world economy due to its reliance on foreign aid. Since then the Korean government has concentrated national wealth on a few large corporations in an attempt to secure economies of scale and boost the international competitiveness of Korean products. In return the chaebol had to satisfy government's export goals and to initiate smaller firms' export activities. The shifting relationships between government and corporate organizations are the key to understanding Korea's internationalization. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asian Geographer Taylor & Francis
