Introduction

Introduction Leon A. Pastalan This volume focuses on some of the services that contribute to persons staying in their current living arrangement for as long as possible. These services cover a broad spectrum ranging from home modification to treatment of depression. Clearly home modification such as installing a bathroom on the first floor where there wasn’t one previously or making all rooms wheel- chair accessible provides important physical supports which may fa- cilitate remaining at home. Living near family and friends of long standing can also provide physical and psychosocial comfort that may encourage individuals to remain where they are as studies of ‘‘naturally occurring retirement communities’’ point out. An extensive discussion of a demonstration study is presented re- garding support services in subsidized housing. The demonstration was geared to determine individual needs and how this impacts on aging in place. One of the needs addressed by another author is psy- chological counseling for residents who are depressed. A sobering note is expressed in one of the articles which points out that what professional services providers ranging from housing to health care think is important is not necessarily what residents consid- er important in terms of aging in place.
