AbstractThis introductory essay describes the founding of the Faaborg Museum in 1910 and the role of Mads Rasmussen, who built up the collection of paintings and sculptures. The essay discusses his links with the town of Faaborg and the important role of the community of artists (the Funen painters) who worked there and gathered at the house of Syrak Hansen. They included Jens Birkholm, Peter Hansen, Johannes Larsen, Søren Lund, Anna Syberg, Fritz Syberg, and Peter Tom-Petersen.
