Summary All the African members of the genus Lissocephala are obligatory fig-breeders while those of the Oriental region are not. The intense radiation of Lissocephala which occurred in the Afrotropical region is expected to have been a consequence of the coevolution between the Ficus, their pollinator fig-wasps and the Lissocephala. Each Ficus yields an array of Lissocephala species displaying different degrees of Ficus specialization patterns. Male genitalia, eggs, mature larvae and pupae are described here for the first time for the African species. Hence, the taxonomy of the genus is revised and two species groups are distinguished according to male genitalia patterns. Three new species from the Ivory Coast and Senegal are also described and a key for the identification of the African species is given.
