Le Comportement Sexuel de Pieris Brassicae L. [Lep. Pieridae]

Le Comportement Sexuel de Pieris Brassicae L. [Lep. Pieridae] Summary To define the mechanisms which occur in the different behavioural sequences of courtship and copulation, we have observed spontaneous and artificial pairings, using various « dummies ». The first « approaching phase », performed by the male, is induced by visual stimuli which have been precised. The two following phases, « whirling flight » and « danse of male around resting female », mainly depend on chimiotactisms allowing recognition of male species by the female those physiological condition partially determines her behavioural response. The phase of « contact of abdomens » and the copulation are induced by mechanotactisms; the releasing of copulation is only a mechanical reflex controlled by the last abdominal ganglion. A diagram showing the entire sexual behaviour of Pieris brassicae is presented in this study. The different behavioural mechanisms are compared with those of other Lepidoptera and their evolutive signification is discussed. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N S ) Taylor & Francis

Abstract

Summary To define the mechanisms which occur in the different behavioural sequences of courtship and copulation, we have observed spontaneous and artificial pairings, using various « dummies ».
