SUMMARY R. Philippe: The male and female reproductive systems of Chrysopa perla, (Neuroptera); anatomical, histological and functional study. An anatomical and histological study of the reproductive organs of Ch. perla, and also behavioral observations, permit us to define more precisely the functions of these organs. Before copulation, the male protrudes a pair of membranous sacks, furnished with long canaliculate bristles, from which flows an (aphrodisiac?) secretion. There is an intromitent organ, the hypovalve, but not a true aedeagus. The male accessory gland consists of seven paired pouches, which give four kinds of secretions; these produce a spermatophore, the structure of which is given in this article. In the female the genital opening is provided with a cover held in place by a « press stud » which must be opened so that copulation can take place. Then the spermatophore is deposited in the bursa copulatrix. On the other hand, during oviposition, the genital valves are separated, but the « press stud » remains closed. The female possesses, therefore, two functional genital openings, one for copulation, the other for oviposition. The accessory (colleterial) gland of the female is a very large median pouch, followed by a muscular reservoir, connected by a duct with the genital chamber. Close to its opening, the duct receives a pair of short tubuliform glands. The accessory gland secretes a mucous substance, whose histochemical characteristics are studied in this article: the secretion is rich in non-sulphated acid mucopolysaccharides and in proteins, which are either free or combined so as to form mucoproteins. During oviposition the female discharges a droplet of this mucous substance, spreads it on a support and stretches it into a thread, at the tip of which a single egg is fixed. Before its discharge the secretion fills the genital chamber and aids the egg to go out.
