Summary F. Pierre: Caedius from african continent. Ecology, biogeography and taxonomy [Tenebrionidae]. This work is based on the taxonomical study of a small collection from the Transvaal Museum, to which have been added the very interesting material from the Paris Museum and G. Frey Museum, as well as several species received later from our friend Mr P. Ardouin. Previously unpublished ecological observations from several sources also have been referred to in this paper. It seems, therefore, that as is the case for many sand-inhabiting animals, Caedius occupy, as larvae and adults, the surface-sands where the water content is practically null, at least in the dry season; pupation takes place deep in dry sand, at the contact zone with damp sand. This peculiarity partly explains a distribution which, due to the extent of desert sand dune, sandy river-banks and sandy soils, covers the whole African continent except the Congo Basin and Berbérie in North Africa. The study of distribution areas has moreover allowed the author to provide evidence of some isolation phenomera which are at the origin of important centres of differenciation (Saharan, Sahelian, Oriental, Austral, to quote only the main ones). From these centres originated the groups which gave birth to the present fauna.
