SUMMARY 28 species of Ectemnius Dahlbom, from Latin America, are identified and presented in a key. Additional notes on synonymy, characters and distribution of 22 of them. Six subgenera are recognized: Clytochrysus Morawitz and Hypocrabro Ashmead, widespread arctogean entities; Protothyreopus Ashmead, mainly nearctic but occurring also in Mexico; Apoctemnius Leclercq as redefined here, restricted to warm areas of North and South America, and more diversified in South America; Protoctemnius Leclercq, exclusively neotropical and related to the preceding; Leocrabro subg. n., a peculiar line, also purely neotropical, with as type species: Ectemnius (Leocrabro) leonesus n. sp. (Argentina, Surinam). Other new species: Ectemnius (Clytochrysus) burgdorfi (Costa Rica), Ectemnius (Apoctemnius) fliranus (Paraguay, Bahia), Ectemnius (Hypocrabro) pelotarum (Pelotas), aprunatus (Mexico), crudator (Argentina), dartanus (Argentina, Paraguay), riosorum (Argentina), ravinus (Mexico), and sennacus (Rio Grande do Sul). New subspecies: Ectemnius (Protothyreopus) rufifemur Packard subsp. orizabinus (Mexico) and (Clytochrysus) chagrinatus Leclercq subsp. cayerae (Tucuman). New synonymy: Ectemnius nigrifrons Cresson (= hector Cameron, subsp.), carinatus Smith (= maculicornis Taschenberg), sonorensis Cameron (= montivagus Cameron, imbutus Fox), odyneroides Cresson (= ariel Cameron), semipunctatus Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau et Brullé (= opulentus Smith, championi Cameron, atitlanae Cameron).
