Les Diptères Thaumaleidae des Alpes et des Carpathes

Les Diptères Thaumaleidae des Alpes et des Carpathes SUMMARY There are at least 43 species of Thaumaleidae in Europe, including those from Corsica and from Madeira. Twenty-eight of them are endemic of one mountaneous area or another, and three others are endemic of an island or of a groups of islands. Only a few species, and among them Thaumalea testacea Ruthé and Th. verralli Edwards, have a very wide distribution inside of Europe, but the larvae of these species are especially eurythermic and can be found both in relatively high mountains and not far from sea level. The author shows that there are species-pairs among the Thaumaleidae. One species of each pair differs from the other only by an important shortening of every part of the male genitalia. Four new species are described. In Th. austriaca Edwards some charactors of the male genitalia show almost continuous variability, so that Th. bruyanti Vaillant cannot be considered as a separate species. A new classification of Thaumalea species is offered. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N S ) Taylor & Francis

Abstract

Four new species are described. In Th. austriaca Edwards some charactors of the male genitalia show almost continuous variability, so that Th. bruyanti Vaillant cannot be considered as a separate species. A new classification of Thaumalea species is offered.
