Summary 12 measurements were performed on the adult mandibles of Locusta migratoria. These datas show how considerable is the abrasion in course of time. An estimation of the age is obtained from six relations between age and wear, with a precision of one week or less. The clearest character on living individuals is the width of abrased part at the apex of the right mandible incisive process, which is covered by the tip of left process when mouth parts are closed. The height of left mandible molar process shows, also a drastic wear leading to vanishing after six weeks. The abrasion speed depends on rate of non assimilated part of food, but not siliceous grains only. The thickening of mandibular walls ought to set off, at least partly, the external “erosion”.
