Marking time: history and identity tn Sydney's Centennial Park Abstract Centennial Park was opened in 1888 to mark a century of European colonization in Australia. From its conception, the park was popularly acclaimed as both a symbolic and a functional site. It became a venue for cricket, horse riding and golf, while park plantings carne to afford sylvan pleasures for the ‘tired-toiler’. Having marked the Centenary, its symbolic status was further enhanced on 1 January 1901.
