(DIPTERA, SYRPfilDAE) (1) Angeles MARCOS-GARCIA Departamento de Biologfa Animal y Parasitologfa, Facultad de Biologfa, Universidad• de Salamanca, 37071-Salamanca (Spain) Merodon escorialensis Strobl, 1909 is a species related to Merodon geniculatus Strobl, 1909 and has been considered up to now as Merodon geniculatus var. escorialensis Strobl, 1909 (Gil-Collado, 1930; Sack, 1935). Because of the lack of type material that could corroborate our first hypothesis, some of the specimens studied were attributed to Merodon geniculatus (Marcos-Garcia, 1985a, b). After having studied all type specimens of M. geniculatus deposited in Benedictine Admont of Austria and Naturhistorische Museum Wien, we arrived at the conclusion that the variety escorialensis attributed by Strobl (Czerny & Strobl, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N S ) Taylor & Francis
