Little is known about the region’s potential as a major player in promoting LOTE (language other than English) education, thus making critical contributions to the promotion of multilingualism and multiculturalism (Gao & Zheng, 2019). Takahashi’s research monograph distinguishes itself from many publications on language education by drawing attention to the learning of LOTE in Japan, where explicit policy support is absent. This book reports on a longitudinal inquiry into two Japanese learners’ self- directed participation in LOTE learning. The book is comprised of 11 chapters in three parts.
