KAWIKA TENGAN (Eds) Canberra, Australian National University Press, 2016 New Mana is an important and welcome addition to the literature on mana, a concept once central to anthropological perceptions of religious thought and symbolism. While occupying a more ambivalent academic status in recent times, mana has gained considerable significance outside academia. Tomlinson and Tengan argue that this is a good reason to refocus anthropological attention on mana, as is its poten- tial to ignite fresh analyses and generate new insights, including into anthropology itself. As Besnier and Jolly note in the Afterword, the chapters plot transformations in context and meaning in the process of mana’s movement around and beyond the Pacific, illustrating the ways in which ‘mana, travelling through time and space, has shape-shifted’ (354). The first two chapters illustrate the prominence of mana in contemporary Hawaii.
