On an Editorial Australia n Journal of Social Work Vol. 23, No. 1 We should stand down for the young. The Cornwell editorial posed the problem of the generation gap in the social work profession in Australia. If there is a real danger of a dichotomy (the young and the elderly) it would be regrettable indeed when common aims should bind us together into a single, energetic force with some understanding of the influences that have directed the lives of various age groups, and with a firm belief in the possibility of change, even for the elderly! The latter have struck a blow or two and have striven over many issues. We've ridden high on waves of satisfaction in what we have achieved from time to time. We have never been complacent. But young social workers apparently think we've done nothing. I cannot be objective about the judgment of the associate editor. But I don't think the judgment itself is objective. Perhaps it can't be. We saw ourselves as inflammatory. The vocal young see us as wet squibs.
