On the redundant nature of variable rules1

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this note is to argue that the generative claim that the device called the variable rule is unmotivated is essentially correct. The patterns of phonological variation summarized by variable rules are shown to be consequences of prosodic organization and well-formedness conditions. The prosodic principles at play can not only predict these patterns but can also be said to explain them.
