The book’s central premise is that French orientalism did not start with Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt, but can be traced back to the first diplomatic and commercial relations between the French and the Ottomans at the beginning of the sixteenth century. In the author ’s own words, ‘The earlier history of French Orientalism is less well known. This book is as much about the orientalizing of France and the French accumulation and consumption of oriental goods as it is about Orientalism in France’ (p. 1).
