If the US calls the shots and Turkey is so important, what do these players have to say? In light of the centrality of Russia and Cyprus’s supposed strategic importance, I would like to see more studies going further back in time as well, at least to One further strength of this book, which appears underplayed by the author, is its relevance for Postcolonial Studies. Although Cypriot independence was discussed by the big powers without local consultation, such procedures were not unique, as is evident by the Congress of Berlin’s 1885 partitioning of Africa. Nor was Cyprus the only former colony whose British bases were part and parcel of an independence agreement, as the problematic history of Diego Garcia attests. Greek-Cypriot calls for independence would seem to reflect other anti-colonial struggles as well. Of interest too is the possibility that Turkey’s control of Cyprus was part of a wider strategy to win advantages elsewhere, a very nineteenth- century Bismarckian policy.
