The Observatory Clinic offers out-patient psychiatric services to adults and children. The first venture began in 1953 and was continued in 1954. A general invitation was sent to mothers of children who had attended the Clinic durin$ the preceding year or so. The mothers were invited to come to a series ot meetings on some aspect of child care, such as emotional problems in school learning. Each meeting began with the screening of a film appropriate to the topic, followed by a talk by a staff member. Before question time the Chairman would suggest that discussion should be related to general aspects of child behaviour, rather than to individual problems. Nevertheless, discussion would soon centre on individual problems such as, "What can you do when the father is not interested in the children's schooling ?" Also, discussion would move away from the topic into other areas, as when a mother would raise a ~uestion about some other aspect of her child's behaviour.
