Part II: History of the site

Part II: History of the site Abstract Horace Walpole first leased his estate at Strawberry Hill on the edge of Twickenham, Middlesex (now Surrey) in 1747. With its riverside location and proximity to London, Twickenham was already established as a popular villa district with a number of notable residents. From as early as 1635, the area’s bucolic Thames-side setting and proximity to London had encouraged the development of riverside estates. As part of the ‘Arcadian’ villa landscape that emerged along the Thames during the eighteenth century, a number of significant neo-Palladian homes were built in the parish.30 To the north of Twickenham village were Orleans House (1710) and Marble Hill (1723-1729). Closer to Walpole stood a cluster of classical houses around the stream, Cross Deep, including the famed villa and garden of poet Alexander Pope.31 http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Studies in the History of Gardens & Designed Landscapes Taylor & Francis
