Perforated plaques associated with integumental glands on the abdomen of Reticulitermes santonensis Feytaud (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)

The integumental glands are varied and have been carefully studied in termites : frontal, mandibular, labral, sternal, tergal, pleural and tibial-tarsal glands (Grassé, 1982). The examination with S.E.M. of the abdominal integument of the Saintonge termi te, Reticulitermes santonensis, bas revealed the existence of cuticular structures which do not seem to have been described before and which are not visible with a light microscope. Perforated plaques, slighty sunken in the integument, are scattered over all the abdominal sternites (fig. 1). They are less numerous on the anterior sternites (0.14 plaques per 2 2 100 µm in soldiers, n = 15) than on the posterior ones (0.31 plaques per 100 µm in sol diers, n = 15). On the whole, they are to be found in the lateral regions rather than in the median region of each sternite. Their shape is circular with an average diameter of 3 µm. Their surface is rippled http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N S ) Taylor & Francis
