Philosophy in Early Safavid Iran: Najm al-Dīn Maḥmūd al-Nayrīzī and His Writings Book Reviews 217 Panzac’s study of an 1830 dictionary ‘‘de la langue franque’’ (‘‘La Lingua Franca:un outil de communication’’). Though most of the articles in this volume mix specific inquiry with concern to address themes of general interest, two papers deserve special mention in this regard. The first is Hans Georg Majer’s ‘‘Uber Urkundenfa ¨ lschung im Osmanischen Reich’’, which is a well-argued reminder that for all the critical (indeed sceptical) attention heaped upon the sources for early Ottoman history, those of later periods should not evade such scrutiny – especially given the apparent ubiquity of forgery and document manipulation, problems the Ottomans themselves recognised and combated. The second is Yavuz Ko ¨ se’s call for close-ranged and theoretically-informed research of marketing in the Ottoman Empire, a field ripe with untapped sources pertaining to foreign companies, advertising, and consumer behaviour (‘‘Flooding the Ottoman Market: Marketing History Related Topics’’). While a few maps and the aid of a less indulgent copyeditor would have strengthened the present volume, these shortcomings do not diminish its overall value.
