A professor at the College of Business Administration in the University of Rhode Island, USA, Nikhilesh Dholakia also teaches as a visiting faculty member at the Indian Institute of Manage- ment, Ahmedabad (IIMA). When not teaching or researching patterns of technology and globalization, Nikhilesh writes poetry and fiction. Travelogues by Nikhilesh Dholakia have appeared in The Itinerant Indian (Bangalore: Unisun Publications, 2005). Some of the creative writings by Nikhilesh and his erstwhile classmates from IIMA appear on the weblog Vista-71 (http://vista-71.blogspot.com/). Nikhilesh lives with his scholar-professor wife Ruby Roy Dholakia in Rhode Island. Background Notes During 1995–2002, I did not visit India, my country of origin; and then made several visits during 2003–2005. In each recent visit, I confront a consumer society in turbu- lent transition.
