Summary The main difficulties which appear in the breeding of burrowing caterpillars lie in the selection of an artificial laying support which is well accepted by females, the transfer of neonate larvae to the nutrient medium without too many traumatisms and the frequent refusal of these caterpillars to enter this medium at the first and second larval instars. In this paper, the authors explain how it is possible to cope with these difficulties through the use of dampened laying supports, the direct transfer of layings to the medium and the use of the negative geo- tropism of the young caterpillars in order to urge them to enter the medium.
