Prophetic Niche in the Virtuous City: The Concept of Ḥikmah in Early Islamic Thought Book Reviews 111 Prophetic Niche in the Virtuous City: The Concept of Hikmah in Early Islamic Thought HIKMET YAMAN, 2011 Leiden: Brill Academic Publishers xii + 316 pp. €121.00/US$166.00 (hardback) ISBN 9789004186620 Hikma, which is variously defined as wisdom, science or philosophy, has a wide spectrum of connotations and comprehends a diverse range of human knowledge. It is among the most frequently discussed subjects in Islamic thought. It shares the connotations of the Greek term σοϕία (sophia), which may be extended to the sense of “science”. Sophia is a central idea in Hellenistic philosophy and religion, and sophiology is a philosophical concept that embraces wisdom, as well as the theo- logical understanding of the wisdom of God. The term hikma is however treated dif- ferently in the different fields of Islamic thought, meaning that philosophers, theologians, Sufis, exegetes and jurists have associated different terminologies with hikma and specified the use of the term differently depending on context. It is connected to the rational faculty by some, such that those who benefit from hikma are highly praised by scholars of their time.
