Summary This paper deals with systematics of the genus Acalypta, mainly but not uniquely for its west-palaearctic representatives. The first part gives some general considerations concerning biogeography, brachypterism and macropterism, problems of subgeneric divisions, and key characters for separating the species. The main part is a discussion of synonymies on the basis of typical materials and original descriptions. The most important results are summarized below: — Acalypta carpathica Horváth is a new synonym (or infraspecific form) of carinata Panzer. — Acalypta samara (Puton) and A. hoberlandli Roubal are new synonyms of A. finitima (Puton). — Acalypta montana Hoberlandt is a new synonym (or infraspecific form) of A. musci (Schrank). — The north american species Acalypta nyctalis Drake is a new synonym of the eastsibirian species A. elegans Horváth. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated in the course of the work.
