Shortly following Carson’s work, efforts to warn the public and political leaders about climate change and global warming poured in, but to little effect among governments worldwide. There was a lot of “talk” and “promises” but as we are all experiencing, climate change is real and running rampant. James Gustave Speth’s recent account of the history of failed leadership, They Knew: The US Federal Government’s Fifty-Year Role in Causing the Climate Crisis (MIT Press), outlines key reports in Washington as early as 1965 and continued fossil fuel extraction and use. Speth includes the story of Our Children’s Trust (formed in 2010) and the hopeful but failed Juliana vs. U.S. legal case. Today, youth climate activists often led by Sweden’sGreta Thunberg, continue their plea to save their future, most recently in a forward for UNICEF’sChildren’s Climate Risk Index.
