Raising Daughters to Resist Negative Cultural Messages About Body Image

Raising Daughters to Resist Negative Cultural Messages About Body Image Abstract This essay proposes that resistance in girls to the culturally induced standards in the social environment can be enhanced by parents who have the capability to view the impact and influence of the sociocultural environment with a critical perspective. The notion of culture-wise parenting is suggested as a buffer for daughters, protecting them from the unfiltered absorption of the cultural influences that frequently lead to disturbances in body image and related pathologies. Suggestions are offered about ways to cultivate culture-wise consciousness in girls and their parents. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Women & Therapy Taylor & Francis
