Summary M.-J. Faucheux: Researches on the tracheal system of adult Diptera. II. — Calliphora erythrocephala., Cyclorrhapha Calliphoridae. The tracheal system of Calliphora erythrocephala Mg., Cyclorrhapha Calliphoridae, is composed of nine pairs of spiracles, leading into nine pairs of spiracular tracheae joined by one pair of lateral trunks. The lateral trunk and the dorsal trunk are joined by connectives transverses on either side. The same fundamental plan, given for Dicranomya chlorea Mg., Nematocera, holds good for Calliphora but numerous tracheae are modified into air sacs. In the thorax, the lateral tracheal trunks are partly dilated into air sacs. The first two pairs of transverse connectives of the abdomen and the dorsal trunks are distended to form a pair of voluminous sacs in abdominal segments 1 and 2. The dorsal superficial tracheae of the thorax are modified into sacs which serves the indirect flight muscles with oxygen. The wing is tracheated anteriorly by tracheae arising from spiracle 1 and posteriorly by tracheae arising from spiracle 2. The haltere is tracheated by tracheae arising from spiracles 2 and 3. A single pair of tracheal trunks, arising from the mesothoracic spiracles, enters the head and forks into a dorsal and a ventral branch, modified into air sacs. The extensive development of the air-sac system is correlated with the high power of flight of Calliphora.
