Drell and Paul Oldfield, Manchester, Manchester University Press, 2021, 392pp, £90.00 (hardback), ISBN 978-1526138538 This new volume of essays celebrates the impact of Graham A. Loud, one of the foremost scholars of the Italian world of the central Middle Ages. Organised around four key themes explored through Loud’s work (namely: historiographies; identity and community; religion and the church; and “conquering Italy and beyond”), the collection provides an important focus for the recognition of Loud’s considerable contribution to this field of study (especially, but by no means limited to the Anglophone scholarship), while at the same time offering ample inspiration for the pursuit of future questions. All scholars active in exploring medieval Italy will at some point encounter Loud’s work. His diligence and skill in translating and editing medieval texts for English-speaking audi- ences and his vision in developing his numerous monographs, articles and edited collections, have left an indelible impact on the field.
