Our understanding of medieval exchange, frontiers, interfaith relationships, mentalities, mobility and much more has profited greatly from focus on the region. Underpinning much of this scholarship is the pioneering work of John Pryor, whose research primarily focuses on the maritime history of the Mediterra- nean. Yet, indicative of the need for any scholar of the Mediterranean to embrace interdisciplinarity and multiple methodological approaches, Pryor’s work moves far beyond shipping technology and underwater archaeology and has made signifi- cant contributions to the history of medieval trade, foreign policy and the crusading movement. Such a broad, interconnected approach is appropriately reflected in Shipping, Trade and Crusade in the Medieval Mediterranean, a volume of essays edited, in honour of Pryor, by Ruthy Gertwagen and Elizabeth Jeffreys.
