SUMMARY Some Macropsychids (Lep.) do not cover their cases with bulky materials (leaves, stems, moss.‥), but exclusively use silk mixed with pulverulent minerals, sand or earth (genera Rebelia, Oreopsyche [partim], Apterona). The methods used by the caterpillars of these species to widen their cases during their growth are described here: new materials are little by little added to the fore part of the case whereas the back end (or apex), become too narrow, is periodically cut out. In the genus Apterona, the apical parts so suppressed frequently keep their position during some time, which explains the existence of « lateral » apertures taking the place of the original apical hole. Besides, some indications are given about the prenymphal moult, which has been observed in the males of Apterona.
