Summary Boulard, M.: On a new African Cicada showing a melanic adaptation in relation to the fires of wooded savannas. In the Central African Republic the author has found a new species of Cicada, here named Soudaniella cortustusa and described, which exists under two forms apparently associated closely with the environment: a pale form in dry forests and not burnt savanna woodlands, and a blak form in fire-inflicted regions. So, S. cortustusa n. sp. offers the first case of melanism now known among the Cicadoidea. As this melanism shows particuliar characters, and specially a vigourous dominance in burnt areas the name « ustusian melanism » (from the latin ustus, burnt) is here proposed for it. At the same time, a few biological notes concerning the new Cicada are given also.
