Summary The development of knowledge of the retrocerebral glands dates from the beginning of the 19th century, when between 1818 and 1835, they were described in approximately twenty species. These first observations, which are examined here from a comparative view point, were derived from those of two precursors: Lyonet in 1780 and Swammerdam around 1670. The interest in their respective contributions, put in the context of the scientific knowledge of the epoch, form the subject of a detailed study. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N S ) Taylor & Francis
