SYDNEY'S ASIAN SEX WORKERS: AIDS AND THE GEOGRAPHY OF A NEW UNDERCLASS

SYDNEY'S ASIAN SEX WORKERS: AIDS AND THE GEOGRAPHY OF A NEW UNDERCLASS Abstract As increased awareness of HIV/AIDS has led to an insistence on the use of condoms among Australian sex workers, the continuing client demand for non-condom using prostitutes is being met mostly by Asian women who have begun working in Sydney since the 1980s. Research for this paper has involved discussions with over 100 Asian sex workers, mostly Thai. These women have the least autonomy in the sex industry and can be described as an ‘underclass’. They have little opportunity to improve their situation due to illegal work status, accumulated debt, lack of English and the prevailing attitudes of clients and parlour management. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asian Geographer Taylor & Francis
