The Almoner Department in the Royal Newcastle Hospital TInLAIMONER DEPARTMENr in THE ROYAL NEWCASTLE HOSPITAL The Department was first established in October, 1943, that is six years ago~ by Miss Ward, \mo left the Department to travel to England ~.n February, 1947. At this time it was the only Almoner Department in a civilian hospital outside the metropolitan area, but there were several Departments established in military hospitals in country areas. The present staff consists of th~ee Almoners and one clerk. It may seem that the clerical staff is~dequate, but it must be under­ stood that the Department at the moment has two dictaphones and the filing system is being re-organised to give the minimum amount of work for the typist, so one capable senior clerk can cope with receiving the patients and the clerical work for the three Almoners. To understand the work of the Department, it is necessary to know something of the organisation of the Hospital, which, in my opinion, is different from any other hospital in Australia. The Hospital consists of a main in-patient block in Newcastle, consisting Of278 beds. The Hospital is built on the cliff over­ looking the sea and river entrance.
