The Development of Islamic Ritual Al-Masaq, Vol. 23, No. 2, August 2011 Book Reviews GERALD HAWTING (Ed.), 2006 [The Formation of the Classical Islamic World: 26] Aldershot: Ashgate xxxiv þ 389 pp. £85.00/US$170.00 (hardcover) ISBN 9780860787129 Gerald Hawting provides a selection of articles that inform us of the critical rituals established by the five pillars of Islam, namely the shaha¯da or affirmation of one’s faith in One God, and Muhammad His prophet; the five daily prayers; fasting during the month of Ramada¯n; payment of zaka¯t, essentially an annual tax on one’s wealth; and the performance of hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, at least once in one’s life time, because ‘‘these are the official rituals that figure most prominently in the textual and scholarly tradition of Islam’’.
