Abstract
Abstract Few grammatical problems in English have attracted as much attention as the progressive, and as yet no consensus is in sight. Yet some theories (or explanations) have gained much wider acceptance than others, and it seems useful to take a closer look at these in order to appreciate their value as well as the apparent difficulties which have prevented them from becoming universally accepted.
