Yet he takes issue with Buber for having imagined it in terms of complicity, friendship or love Ð in short Ð reciprocity. In the presence of the fellow man/woman, the I, according to Buber, trans- forms itself into a Thou. Refusing this moral symbiosis, Levinas proposes a relationship far more challenging in which the I offers herself unconditionally to the Other without ever being léonard rosmarin able to bridge the abyss separating her from this Other, without ever being able to discharge her responsibilities toward this Other. To underscore THE I–YO U his objection to BuberÕs conception of the ethical relationship, Levinas exploits the very strong RELATIO NSHIP IN distinction that still exists in the French language http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Angelaki: Journal of Theoretical Humanities Taylor & Francis
