The entire work is refracted through an Athonite perspective and, if this book had restricted its aim to exploring the story of the mandylion as presented in the MSS of Mount Athos, it could be viewed as successful. Unfortunately, Guscin states in his Introduction (pp.1–4) that he is endeavouring to answer Runciman’s call for a biography of this enigmatic relic and in this he sadly fails on a variety of levels. The first issue is that, for a book ostensibly about an image, very little visual material is included.
