The Impotence Epidemic: Men's Medicine and Sexual Desire in Contemporary China The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology, 2016 Vol. 17, No. 2, pp. 182–190 Book Reviews The Impotence Epidemic: Men’s Medicine and Sexual Desire in Contemporary China EVERETT YUEHONG ZHANG Durham and London, Duke University Press, 2015 In this book, Everett Zhang situates the increasing demand of Chinese men for treat- ment of impotence in the social changes and production of desire resulting from econ- omic reform in China. Based on interviews with 350 men and some of their partners from Beijing and Chengdu, Zhang argues that the impotence epidemic manifests not just trauma and suffering, but also individual desires to live a full life. To Zhang, the impotence epidemic is, rather than ‘a negative event’ (15), a positive one. It is ‘a con- tagion of desire’, representing a transition in China from ‘downplaying desire to pro- moting the desire to desire’ (15). For this research, Zhang conducted observations, interviews and interactions with doctors and patients mainly in two field sites: the Department of Sexual Medicine in Yuquan Hospital in Beijing and the Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Chengdu.
