The longitudinal assessment of preventive measures and policies for earthquake disasters in China

The longitudinal assessment of preventive measures and policies for earthquake disasters in China Earthquakes and their associated disasters have captured significant attention after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (in southwest China) and the recent 2011 Tōhoku earthquake (in northeast Japan). Given that a large part of Chinese territory lies on earthquake-prone zones, together with social development, the Chinese authorities have been paying more effort in mitigating earthquake risk over the past few decades. Yet, in academia, many earthquake studies in China focus mainly on the technical aspect of individual earthquakes, while the longitudinal assessment of earthquake preventive and policy measures is overlooked. At the moment, the progressive changes of the policy dimension of earthquakes remain poorly understood. In this study, we sought to address the above issue by tracking the changes of earthquake preventive measures and policies in China between the 1976 Tangshan earthquake and 2008 Wenchuan earthquake – the two largest earthquakes in China in recent decades. We also evaluated the effectiveness of earthquake measures and policies during the time. Based on our findings, the associated policy implications in mitigating damage caused by large earthquakes were discussed. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asian Geographer Taylor & Francis
