AbstractA 1607 map of the farms in Scammonden is the starting point for an enquiry into the landscape history of a typical Pennine valley. A comparison with an Ordnance Survey map of 1908 shows little change to the basic framework of settlement. Exploration on the ground reveals much that is still recognizable, despite the construction of the M62 motorway and two reservoirs. Documentary research shows that the settlement pattern was created before the Black Death.
