The Origin and State of Modern Still Life: The Creative Act of Caravaggio

The Origin and State of Modern Still Life: The Creative Act of Caravaggio AbstractThis article by the influential Czech art historian Vincenc Kramář (1877-1960) attests to his broad interests in both the old masters and modernism. Kramář analyzes Caravaggio’s innovative approaches to still life in painting within his own artistic context, and discusses his impact on, and relevance to, later developments in still-life painting. The author notes an affinity between Caravaggio’s approach and Picasso’s and Braque’s representations of still life. It is argued that Caravaggio provided the aesthetic preconditions for certain strategies used in Cubist still life. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Art in Translation Taylor & Francis
