The social scene in Singapore T~E SOCIAL SCENE IN SINGAPORE The basic factor influencing the social scene in Singapore is that common feature of colonial countries - lack of industr~allsatlon. There are no heavy industries at all in I~alaya. The four main types of industry are the processing of rubber, tin, copper or pineapples; light engineer- ing for the repairing of machinery; simple con- sumption goods and cottage industries. Singapore lives through its trade - through the import of consumer goods, the export of rubber and tin, and throuc~h a large entre-pot trade. It is thus an unstable economy, pecularily at the mercy of trade and economic conditions elsewhere in the worlds. Bound up ~ith this lack of industriallsation, is the relatively small number of skilled workers, and the large number who in times of unemployment, make a living through their wits. Even in 1950, a year of prosperity, it was estimated that one person in every 30-35 of the population was earning his living through hawking. Coupled with this unbalanced economic situation is a s oaring blrtkrate.
