Cross, Eugene, Oregon, Pickwick Publications, 2022, 215pp, £28.00 (paperback), ISBN 978-1-5326-6251-5 Deciding on the founding date for institutions can be a complex thing. This book, com- missioned by the College, was intended to be published in 2020 and to mark three hundred years of the College. Often the origins of Bristol Baptist College are dated to 1679 and the deed of gift of Edward Terrill, and while some of this story is also told, the three hundred years begins when this money, and a subsequent bequest, was first used to pay a tutor, Bernard Foskett, assistant minister at the Broadmead church. The three hundred years of ministerial formation are thus 1720–2020. The publication of the book, though, was delayed until 2022, partly because of Covid and partly due to the illness and then the sad and untimely death of one of its authors, Anthony Cross. The first thing to acknowledge and recognise is that this is not the book that Gould- bourne and Cross had planned and intended.
