The use op volunteer, lay counsellors in marriage guidance THE USE OF VOLUN.~R, LAY CO UNSELLORS IN ~,IAER IAGE GUIDANCE The marriage guidance movement in the United Kingdom has gro~m up as a result of public concern for the increase in divorce petitions and the dis- astrous effect which it is believed that separation and disharmony between parents has upon children. The preservation of family llfe is the pl mary aim of the National Marriage Guidance Council and of local ~;~arrlage Guidance Councils throughout the country. The existing plan of operation, which is designed to cater mainly for the Protestant popul- ation, is the result of much careful thought and has regard for ethics and law as well as the psychological needs of individuals within the family group. Voluntary, lay counsellors are used for both educational and remedial work and the National Marriage Guidance Council undertakes the respons- ibility of selecting and training these people, for which service it receives a measure f financial support from the British Government.
